How Hypnotherapy Works

Have you ever drove home, arrived and realized you don’t remember the last ten minutes of the drive? Or, have you been so delighted with a television program or video game that you did not realize that someone was talking to you? THAT IS HYPNOSIS! We are all in states of hypnosis at least twice every day, when we wake up and when we are going to sleep. Hypnosis is something we experience daily and it is nothing strange or bizarre. A person chooses to enter into a hypnotic state they stay in and come out at will. In fact, all hypnosis is self-hypnosis; the hypnotherapist is only the guide.

Hypnosis has proven to be one of the most effective means of bringing about the changes you desire in your life. While in hypnosis your conscious, or critical mind (the part that’s analyzing this now), is temporarily turned down and you work directly with the feeling mind (subconscious) where real change takes place quickly. Hypnosis is a SAFE, natural response which allows you greater control over all aspects of your life. Your conscious mind is powerful, but your subconscious mind is infinitely more powerful!

Use of hypnosis or trance healing began as early as 1000 BC by ancient Egyptians in their “Sleep Temples”, where priests put people to “sleep” and suggested that they be cured…and they usually were. It was popularized in the nineteenth century by Franz Anton Mesmer and the term Mesmerism emerged. It was also used by doctors in WWI and WWII in place of anesthetics. Sigmund Freud made extensive use of hypnosis in his early career and this is the origin of the “therapist’s couch.”

Hypnosis is a natural state of heightened awareness dominated by the subconscious mind. Hypnotherapy involves guided concentration on one small thing to the exclusion of everything else which achieves selective thought in the subconscious and then a suggestion is given to create positive change.

Most people know that hypnosis can be used for weight reduction and becoming smoke-free. Did you know that hypnosis can also be effective for pain management including headaches and chronic pain, reducing side effects of cancer treatment, hospital stays, surgery, palliative care needs, stress reduction, anxiety or panic attacks, fears or phobias, insomnia, memory improvement, improving self-esteem and self-confidence, childhood
concerns, school issues, goal setting, motivation, childbirth, and medical and dental procedures requiring an aesthetic? The possibilities are endless.

Why choose hypnosis?

In hypnosis you access your subconscious or the more powerful part of your mind where real, lasting change takes place. You may have heard it said that we only use approximately 10% of our brain; hypnosis is a way to access to that other 90%.

What can you expect from a typical first hypnosis session?

Generally a person would experience a little interview where the hypnotist asks questions about them, reasons for wanting hypnosis, and different personality questions so the hypnotist can tailor the session to each individual. After the hypnotist dispels any fears or misconceptions about hypnosis and creates a general understanding for the process. Once all concerns are discussed the hypnotherapist gives an opportunity for the client to experience the power of their imagination which enables the hypnotherapist to decide which induction techniques will suite their client the best. When all questions and concerns are answered it is time to begin a hypnosis session. The entire process can take anywhere from 60 minutes to 90 minutes, depending on the clients’ needs.

What can be accomplished through hypnosis?

Almost anything, provided there is a readiness and willingness on the part of the person being hypnotized. If you approach hypnosis with confidence, rather than fear, you will achieve your desired goals.

What People Say About Hypnosis

Sleep I found the first thing that hypnosis helped with was my sleeping. I had trouble getting to sleep and staying asleep. Now all I can say is “where have you been?”, now I feel great and I can sleep all night." ~ Shirley E, Castor
